In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a family in mourning, Laken Riley, a young woman from Woodstock, Georgia, was brutally murdered in a case that has sparked controversy due to the suspect's immigration status.

The accused, a Venezuelan national who was in the United States illegally, was not supposed to be in the country at the time of the incident.

Allyson Phillips, Riley's mother, has been vocal about her grief and the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death. Following Riley's funeral on Friday, Phillips took to Facebook to express her sorrow and to thank her community for their support during this challenging time.

In her post, Phillips wrote, "As I sat down to write this message, I really just have no words. My family has faced the most devastating, unimaginable loss that anyone could ever be forced to endure." She went on to express her gratitude to her faith, saying, "I would like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for being with me and my family during this heartbreaking time."

"The amount of love, support, and help that we have received during this horrific nightmare is overwhelming," she said. "We are beyond grateful for everyone who has stepped up to be here for us through this difficult time."

Riley was a nursing student at Augusta University and was jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens when the incident occurred. The suspect, Jose Ibarra, is a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who entered the United States in September with his wife and her five-year-old son. The family had applied for asylum and were transported to New York.

Ibarra was previously arrested for child endangerment after riding a moped with the boy without any protection. Despite this, he was released and the record was sealed. Following a separation from his wife, Ibarra relocated to Georgia, where his brother resided. His brother was reportedly working on the UGA campus using a counterfeit green card. Video evidence allegedly shows Ibarra disposing of bloody clothes and other evidence.

The case has drawn attention to the immigration policies under President Joe Biden's administration, which has expanded the asylum process and allowed asylum seekers to remain in the U.S. while awaiting trial, a process that can take between five to seven years. Critics argue that these policies have resulted in an influx of illegal immigrants, with over eight million reportedly entering the country during Biden's first term.

As the investigation continues, Phillips has updated her Facebook profile picture to a heart with her daughter's name and the caption "Say Her Name," a poignant reminder of the young life tragically cut short. Amidst her grief, Phillips continues to call for prayers and support for her family as they navigate this devastating loss.
