In a recent episode of “CNN Newsroom,” Representative Veronica Escobar (D-Texas), who also serves as the co-chair of the Biden campaign, attempted to dissociate the tragic murder of 22-year-old University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley from the Biden administration's immigration policies.

She further asserted that crime rates have decreased in areas where undocumented immigrants have been relocated.

The suspect in the murder of the nursing student is reportedly an illegal immigrant, which has sparked a heated debate about the country's immigration policies. Escobar, however, sought to deflect the blame onto the previous administration, stating, "When Donald Trump was in office, over a million migrants were released. I’m sure that there was a fraction of those migrants who also committed crimes."

Escobar also defended the presence of undocumented immigrants in the country, arguing that it is not feasible to deport every undocumented individual due to resource constraints and potential economic impacts. She stated, "I’m sure you’ve seen the reports ... that it has been immigrant labor, the immigrant workforce that has actually propped up our economy. The challenge we face is that Congress has not created legal pathways for them."

However, critics argue that the Biden administration has used executive actions to weaken border security, thereby exacerbating the immigration issue. The administration is accused of intentionally allowing an influx of illegal immigrants, with estimates suggesting that the number could surpass 8 million by October.

Even CNN host Jim Acosta seemed surprised by Escobar's comments, questioning whether President Biden should address the issue of crimes committed by immigrants. He asked, "But when you have cases like the case down in Georgia, the case up in New York where you have migrants committing crimes that get a lot of attention, horrific crimes, is there a need on the president’s part to start calling some of this out?"

Escobar maintained her stance, asserting that immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans and that crime rates have decreased in areas where immigrants have been relocated. She reiterated her call for immigration reform, blaming Republicans for obstructing progress in this area.

However, her claims have been met with skepticism. Critics question the validity of her assertion that crime rates have decreased in areas with a high concentration of immigrants. They also argue that the number of immigrants released during the Trump administration pales in comparison to the projected number of illegal immigrants expected to enter the country by the end of September under the Biden administration.

The debate over immigration policies and their impact on crime rates continues to divide the nation. While some argue for more stringent border controls and deportation policies, others advocate for comprehensive immigration reform that provides legal pathways for immigrants. Amidst this debate, the tragic murder of Laken Riley serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of these policy decisions.
