Christopher Clements, a 42-year-old man already serving a life sentence for a 2014 murder, was found guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday in connection with the death of another young girl in Tucson years prior.

The Pima County Superior Court jury also convicted Clements of kidnapping and burglary related to the case of Isabel Celis, who was only 6 years old when she disappeared from her family's home in 2012.

Clements' sentencing is set for March 25. The jury began deliberations on Tuesday in the retrial, which commenced on February 7. The previous trial ended in a mistrial last year when the jury could not reach a consensus.

Clements became a person of interest in the Celis case in 2017. According to Tucson police, he offered to lead FBI agents to the girl's remains, while denying any involvement in her death, in a bid to have charges dropped in an unrelated burglary case.

During the closing arguments on Tuesday, Deputy County Attorney Tracy Miller argued that it was not a coincidence that no one but Clements found Celis in the five years she was missing, as reported by the Arizona Daily Star. "He doesn’t come forward unless there is something to gain," Miller said. "There’s no other person it could be."

In response, Clements' lawyer, Eric Kessler, asserted that there was no evidence linking Clements to the crime and that the police could not prove he had entered the Celis home, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

Clements was arrested in 2018 for the murders of Celis and 13-year-old Maribel Gonzalez, who vanished in June 2014 while on her way to a friend's house. Gonzalez's body was discovered a few days later in a remote area north of Tucson, while Celis' remains were found in the same general vicinity years later.

In 2022, Clements received a life sentence for the kidnapping and murder of Gonzalez. The jury in the retrial was not informed of this conviction or his history of sex crime convictions in several states dating back to when he was 16.

Celis' mother and brother were present in the courtroom on Thursday but left after the verdict was read, Tucson TV station KOLD reported. Kessler did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the verdict. Miller told KOLD that the "jury did a great job sorting through all of the evidence and all of the info we had to reach what we believe was the right result."
