Emerging Threat: Chinese Nationals Are POURING In At Northern U.S. Border

However, a new issue is emerging that has largely gone unnoticed: the increasing vulnerability of the northern border.

Historically, the U.S.-Canada border has seen a significantly lower number of illegal crossings compared to its southern counterpart. However, recent events suggest a worrying trend. The number of illegal aliens entering the U.S. from the north, while still relatively small, is on the rise.

In a recent incident, U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehended four Chinese nationals attempting to cross into Maine from Canada. The group was reportedly aided by a Chinese national residing in New York, who was driving them at the time of their arrest.

The U.S. Border Patrol Houlton sector released a statement saying, "After noticing suspicious activity along the border, vigilant Fort Fairfield Border Patrol agents arrested three Chinese nationals attempting to use the cover of darkness to illegally enter the United States." The statement also revealed that a fourth Chinese national, suspected of attempting to smuggle the group into the country, was arrested nearby.

The increasing number of Chinese nationals attempting to cross both the southern and northern borders is a cause for concern. Leaving China is not a simple process, raising questions about the motives and means of those attempting to do so. If these individuals are seeking a better life, why are they resorting to illegal means rather than using a legal port of entry?

The apprehension of Chinese nationals at the northern border is a relatively new phenomenon. Until recently, such incidents were rare. However, the number of Chinese nationals seeking to enter the U.S. has been steadily increasing. In 2021, the figure stood at 450. By 2022, it had risen to over 2,000, and by 2023, it had skyrocketed to more than 24,314. Most alarmingly, since the start of the 2024 fiscal year in October, there have already been over 18,750 encounters.

The recent arrests took place in Fort Fairfield, according to the U.S. Border Patrol Houlton Sector. The agents reported that the individuals were using the cover of darkness to cross illegally from New Brunswick into the United States.

The statement from the U.S. Border Patrol read, "After noticing suspicious activity along the border, vigilant Fort Fairfield Border Patrol agents arrested three Chinese nationals attempting to use the cover of darkness to illegally enter the United States. A driver from New York, also a Chinese national who is already in immigration proceedings, was also arrested and suspected of attempting to further the illegal entry." A fourth Chinese national, who was driving a vehicle at the time, was also arrested on suspicion of aiding the illegal crossing.

It remains unclear whether the arrested individuals are connected to the Asian Transnational Criminal Organizations, as identified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to the DHS, these groups are involved in drug smuggling across the northern border of Maine, with their proceeds funding human smuggling and other criminal activities.

This emerging trend is deeply concerning. It underscores the urgent need to strengthen security measures at the northern border. However, given the current administration's approach to border security, it seems unlikely that any significant action will be taken until a new President is in office.
