In the ongoing discourse surrounding firearms, it is startling to observe the lack of understanding about guns among many individuals on the political left.

Despite their limited knowledge on the subject, these individuals frequently engage in discussions about firearms, often mischaracterizing standard AR-15s as automatics or machine guns. They seem to overlook the fact that the issue, if one exists, lies not with the firearm itself, but with the individual wielding it. Yet, the narrative persists that firearms are inherently malevolent and must be prohibited.

One would expect a higher level of understanding from members of the Supreme Court, especially when they are deliberating on a case involving firearms. However, this expectation was not met during the oral arguments in the bump stock ban case on Wednesday. Several justices and government attorneys demonstrated a significant lack of knowledge about firearms.

In January, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson had some insightful questioning during the Colorado Trump ballot case. She queried whether the officer provision of the 14th Amendment was applicable to former President Donald Trump. This led me to reconsider my initial assessment of her.

Regrettably, Justice Jackson's display of discernment during the ballot case was noticeably absent on Wednesday. The same Justice who declined to define what a woman is, stating she was "not a biologist," made some truly absurd remarks about bump stocks, in conjunction with a government attorney.

The government attorney claimed that bump stocks enable the firing of 600 rounds per second. Justice Jackson further exacerbated this misinformation by stating that bump stocks could facilitate the firing of 800 rounds per second.

Her casual dismissal of the accuracy of her statement, evidenced by her use of the term "whatever," was particularly concerning.

She also demonstrated a misunderstanding about the operation of firearms equipped with bump stocks, asserting that the trigger is only pulled once during firing. This is incorrect; the trigger must be pulled each time the gun is fired.
