The bustling city of New York is set to implement a congestion pricing program, which would impose a $15 fee on passenger cars traversing downtown during peak hours.

This initiative, which has been delayed due to a series of legal challenges, is anticipated to commence in mid-June, as reported by the New York Post.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced via Twitter that the inaugural public hearing on the proposed toll rate schedule for the Central Business District Tolling Program was scheduled to start at 6 pm EST.

According to the MTA's document, trucks navigating through downtown New York City during peak hours, defined as 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, could face a $24 charge. The steepest fees, amounting to $54, are designated for multi-unit trucks and licensed sightseeing buses. The New York Post revealed that toll rates would decrease by 75% during nighttime, and low-income car owners would be eligible for a 50% discount if they make 10 trips to the tollway each month.

While taxis and for-hire vehicles in New York City are exempt from the toll, their passengers are expected to pay an additional $1.25 to $2.50 per trip, as per the document.

Proponents of the program argue that it would alleviate the congestion on New York City streets and generate billions of dollars in revenue, as reported by the outlet. The city plans to utilize the funds from the tolls to enhance their infrastructure.

However, critics contend that this is merely another expense that drivers will be compelled to bear and that the pollution and traffic issues would simply be diverted to alternate streets that drivers would use to evade the toll, as reported by the outlet.

John Lindsay, spokesperson for Governor Kathy Hochul, stated, as reported by Politico, "Gov. Hochul has been clear from the start: congestion pricing is critical to New York’s future, delivering better transit, cleaner air and less traffic clogging our streets." He added that the governor has repeatedly expressed that $23 is too costly for the central business district tolls and is meticulously reviewing the recommendations of the Traffic Mobility Review Board.
