In a recent announcement, Vice President Kamala Harris revealed a new policy that will allow college students to earn federally-funded work-study income by registering voters.

The announcement was made via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The federal work-study program is designed to help students cover their daily expenses while pursuing their education, as stated by the Department of Education.

Vice President Harris explained the rationale behind the policy, saying, “We have been doing work to promote voter participation for students. For example, we have under the Federal Work-Study program now allow students to get paid through Federal Work-Study to register people and to be non-partisan poll workers. As we know, this is important for a number of reasons. One, to engage our young leaders in this process and activate them in terms of their ability to strengthen our communities.”

In addition to this, the Biden administration disclosed plans to have federal agencies encourage voter registration. This includes displaying signage promoting Vote.gov at 6,000 Social Security Administration offices, the Department of Health and Human Services emailing voter registration information to individuals who obtain health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and placing Vote.gov signage at National Park entrances and visitor centers, as reported by Axios. The administration also intends to promote voter registration on three specific dates: the Juneteenth federal holiday, the August 6 anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, and National Voter Registration Day on September 24.

The 2020 election saw President Biden garner significant support from young voters, with 60% of voters aged 18-29 backing him, according to CNN's exit poll. The same poll reported that Biden had 65% support from voters aged 18-24.

However, President Biden faces a challenging reelection campaign. The RealClearPolitics average of general election polls for a head-to-head matchup currently shows former President Donald Trump leading Biden by 2.1%. When Green Party candidate Jill Stein and independent candidates Cornel West and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are included, Trump's lead expands to 3%.
