MSNBC host Joy Reid recently sparked controversy with her comments on a TikTok video, where she questioned the motives behind Senator Tommy Tuberville's (R-AL) statement that the U.S. needs more children.

In the video, Reid asked, "Why do we need more kids?" and suggested that Tuberville's argument "sounds slaveryish."

The video was a response to Tuberville's comments on a recent Alabama court case ruling that frozen embryos should be considered children. Tuberville had stated, "we need to have more kids" in the US.

Reid challenged Tuberville's statement, questioning who the "we" referred to. She insinuated that the senator was advocating for a federal mandate to increase the population, a move she found hypocritical given the Republican party's stance against illegal immigration.

Reid further argued that neither the country nor Alabama needed more children. However, she noted a historical period when Alabama did require more children - during the era of slavery.

"There was a time when the state of Alabama absolutely needed more kids, because, you know, Alabama was a slave state," Reid stated. "And the mandate of the planter class in Alabama was for black women to produce more kids because those kids were property and they could work more kids and make more money on their plantations."

Reid then suggested that Tuberville's call for more children might be a veiled attempt to replace the labor provided by illegal immigrants in Alabama. "Are you saying the state of Alabama needs more kids because you think that those populations will include people who are destitute and desperate enough, if you kick out the immigrants, like a lot of y'all want to do and you can make them do the work that the migrants are doing now? ‘Cause that kinda sounds slaveryish."

Reid continued to question Tuberville's motives, speculating that his call for more children might be a coded message to white Americans to combat the "great replacement thing." She suggested that Tuberville might be "concerned that there's not enough white people in the population" compared to other minorities.
