Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and a professor of Pan-African Studies at Cal State University Los Angeles, recently stirred controversy with her social media comments.

Abdullah, 51, took to X on Super Bowl Sunday to express her views, stating, “Why do I feel like it’s slightly racist to be a Taylor Swift fan?” Following the Kansas City Chiefs' victory, she further added, “Why do I feel like this was some right-wing, white-supremacist conspiracy?!?! Booooooo!!!!” Abdullah's remarks also extended to Swift's relationship with Travis Kelce, a player for the Chiefs.

In response to the ensuing media coverage, Abdullah defended her stance, tweeting with the hashtag “#TaylorSwiftHasSomeRacistFans” and criticizing the media for sensationalizing her tweets. She emphasized the negative impact of such reporting, stating, “When fake ass journalists from right-wing outlets turn tweets into news, they spur actual violent responses from their idiotic white-delusionist followers.”

Abdullah's contentious social media activity is not her first brush with controversy. In 2020, she filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department following a swatting incident at her Crenshaw residence. Abdullah alleged that the LAPD's actions were retaliatory and put her and her children at risk, highlighting the department's failure to verify the hostage claims made in the false emergency call. Despite these challenges, Abdullah remains steadfast in her activism, even in the face of subsequent swatting incidents.
