A town hall meeting held by Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Queens, New York City, on Thursday, intended to highlight the potential benefits of the Green New Deal, instead incited the ire of some attendees.

Ocasio-Cortez, a known advocate of socialist policies, was interrupted by two individuals who accused her of prioritizing the welfare of illegal immigrants over the constituents she was elected to represent. One of the disruptors, Jonathan David Rinaldi, announced his intention to challenge Ocasio-Cortez for her congressional seat.

"I'm Jonathan David Rinaldi, and I'm running for Congress against AOC. The Green New Deal is a scam," Rinaldi declared, interrupting Ocasio-Cortez's speech on environmental justice and climate change policies.

Rinaldi further accused lawmakers of allocating New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartments to illegal immigrants, thereby neglecting citizens. "They’re giving the NYCHA apartments away, they’re giving illegal aliens $10,000 a day… I want you to debate me AOC, debate me," he demanded.

Ocasio-Cortez, seemingly unfazed, smiled on stage as security attempted to remove Rinaldi.

A second man then stood up, joining Rinaldi in his protest. "Secure the border now," he demanded, accusing Ocasio-Cortez of ignoring the issue of violent Venezuelan migrants and prioritizing illegal immigrants over her constituents. "You don’t care, all you care about is illegal aliens and their votes. You don’t care about your constituents," he accused.

Ocasio-Cortez's supporters quickly drowned out the man's accusations with chants of "AOC, AOC," and applause.

As Rinaldi was escorted out, he continued his tirade, accusing lawmakers of selling out citizens in favor of illegal immigrants. "Every single one of us is being sold out by people that have brought illegals here to vote," he shouted.

Ocasio-Cortez retorted, "Well clearly I don't, because I'm an elected member of Congress, so keep it pushing bro."

Once the men were removed, Ocasio-Cortez addressed her stance on immigration. "Clearly, this community -- Astoria, Jackson Heights, also across the Bronx – clearly supports progressive immigration policies that welcomes all of our neighbors," she stated.

She further emphasized her constituents' support for a path to citizenship and an end to harsh immigration policies. "We clearly support a path to citizenship, we clearly support ending draconian immigration policies and that is why you all… support my representation of our community in Congress because we have had enough," she said, to applause from the audience.

Ocasio-Cortez also pointed out that while anti-immigrant voices are loud, they are few. "We have seen the voices that are anti-immigrant in this country are very very loud but they are very very few and we have to look around and realize how many of us are here in support of our neighbors and an acknowledgment of the fact that virtually all of us are descendants of immigrants, or indigenous people, or enslaved people," she said.

The hecklers were specifically protesting illegal immigration, not immigration in general.

While both legal and illegal immigrants are prohibited from voting, the New York City Council passed legislation in 2021 allowing non-citizens residing in the country for at least 30 days to vote. However, this law was later ruled illegal and an appeal was denied by a New York state appeals court.

According to a Fox News analysis, nearly 7.3 million migrants have illegally crossed the southwest border under President Biden's administration, a number greater than the population of 36 individual states. Furthermore, New York City has accommodated more than 178,600 migrants since spring 2022, with approximately 65,000 still under the city’s care, as reported by the mayor’s office.
