Prominent political analyst Megyn Kelly has raised concerns about the physical fitness of law enforcement officers, particularly those who are overweight.

She urged officers to improve their fitness levels during a recent discussion on her show.

Kelly's comments were in response to a video that had gone viral, showing the New York Police Department's (NYPD) dance team performing for a local news station. After playing the video for her panel, Kelly pointed out that some of the women in the video seemed to be in poor physical shape. She went on to say that this is indicative of a broader issue affecting police departments across the country.

Kelly stated, "I'm all for exercise and stress relief, but some of these women appear to be in poor physical condition. This is a reflection of a larger problem within the police force, not only in New York City but in many cities across America post-George Floyd. We are struggling to attract physically fit individuals to the police force."

Kelly further revealed that an NYPD officer, who wished to remain anonymous, had confided in her about the department's struggle with overweight and, in some cases, obese officers. This issue is particularly prevalent among female officers, but it is not exclusive to them. The officer expressed concern that these officers are unable to pursue criminals effectively due to their physical condition.

Kelly continued, "We have lowered the standards to such an extent that we are missing out on arrests. I looked into it, and it turns out to be true. In 2022, amidst a wave of retirements, the NYPD replaced a six-foot wall in the police academy gym with a chain-link fence. Even I could climb that."

Kelly also criticized the NYPD's decision to eliminate the 1.5-mile run requirement for new recruits, a move intended to increase the number of women in the force. She argued that all officers, regardless of gender, should be physically fit.

Kelly said, "They scrapped the timed 1.5-mile run for new recruits, hoping to attract more women. Their justification was that no patrol officer ever has to run a mile and a half. My issue is that officers should maintain their fitness, regardless of whether they are dancing or on duty. It is not politically incorrect to discuss this issue."

The NYPD faced criticism in March 2023 when it announced that it would be lowering its fitness standards for new recruits due to a severe recruitment shortage, as reported by Fox News. The department's 1.5-mile run in 14 minutes and 21 seconds was replaced with a relay on a multistep physical course test with a time limit of approximately 4.5 minutes. Furthermore, in 2022, the department replaced its six-foot wall requirement with a chain-link fence that is easier to climb.

The NYPD is not the only department facing this issue. In November, the Pennsylvania House passed a bill to lower police academy fitness standards, giving new recruits more time to improve their fitness, according to ABC27.
