New York Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres has reportedly severed ties with the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), following remarks from fellow members criticizing Israel's actions during the Gaza conflict, as reported by Axios.

Torres, known for his staunch support of Israel, had previously condemned the October 7 attacks by Hamas, stating, "No one should blame the victim, no one should explain or excuse the terrorism." This sentiment starkly contrasts with the views expressed by other caucus members. Torres' name has been removed from the CPC's roster, and his departure has been confirmed by a House Democrat and a source familiar with the matter, according to Axios.

Torres is the second Democrat to exit the caucus in the wake of the October 7 attacks, following Florida Representative Lois Frankel's departure in November. Frankel's decision to leave came after she voted to censure Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib, a fellow caucus member, for her comments condemning Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. The conflict with Hamas resulted in over 1,200 Israeli casualties and more than 240 hostages.

House Democrats who spoke to Axios reportedly suggested that Torres' departure had been anticipated. One commented that Torres "has been real pro-Israel, and being from the Bronx, that's a good place for him to be." Another expressed surprise that Torres had ever been a part of the CPC.

While Torres has not officially confirmed his departure, he recently posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, suggesting that the "international community" should prioritize securing the release of the remaining hostages over "pressuring Israel." He further suggested that pressure should be applied to Hamas to end the conflict and to Hezbollah to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, thereby allowing 60,000 displaced Israelis to return home.

Meanwhile, several members of the Squad face primary challenges funded by the pro-Israel super PAC American Israel Public Affairs Committee. A spokesperson for the PAC previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation that their activists are committed to supporting pro-Israel candidates and defeating detractors.
