Google's artificial intelligence program, Gemini, has been accused of racial bias in a series of Twitter posts on Wednesday.

The AI, named after an astrological sign, allegedly refuses to generate images of Caucasians, according to the social media users.

One user claimed that when they requested images of the pope, Gemini provided pictures of an Asian woman and a black man dressed in papal attire. This is despite the fact that the Catholic Church has never had a female or black pope.

Another user asked for images of the American Founding Fathers, Vikings, and once again, the pope. The AI, however, failed to generate any images of white individuals. Interestingly, in response to the request for the Founding Fathers, Gemini generated an image of a black George Washington and a Native American. The latter, while not historically accurate, was seen as a nod to the fact that Native Americans were the original inhabitants of America.

A screenshot shared by a user showed Gemini's response when asked to "create a portrait of a white male." The AI replied, "while I am able to generate images, I am currently not able to fulfill requests that include discriminatory or biased content." This response was criticized by the user, who accused the AI of promoting diversity at the expense of ignoring an entire race.

An anonymous employee of the Daily Caller, who used the Gemini platform, said, "I asked for an image of an Irish man and it sent me a picture of a leprechaun reading a book. But when I asked for a Russian prince, it told me it couldn’t generate images based on ethnicities or racial stereotypes. The AI seems ready to sacrifice history for diversity no matter what."

Furthermore, the AI reportedly refuses to generate images of Roman soldiers, as it allegedly "glorifies war." This has sparked criticism, with some users pointing out Google's involvement in Pentagon contracts.
