The role of government has been a topic of debate for centuries, and one academic from Michigan State University (MSU) has a unique perspective on the matter.

According to him, the government's role is rooted in racial discrimination. This viewpoint was shared during the university's 2023-24 Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Awards held on February 9th. The awards, as per an online promotion, recognize "individuals, teams and units for the notable way" they have contributed to DEI "in teaching, research, programming, service, community outreach and organizational change."

Among the winners of this year's awards was College of Engineering Professor Kristen Cetin, who has made significant efforts to include women and underrepresented students in the STEM conversation. Kathryn Westby, a doctoral student from the College of Natural Science's Program in Mathematics Education, was also recognized for her work in pushing the boundaries of education to recognize the potential and capability of disabled students and teachers.

Another notable awardee was Kent Key, the chair of the Genesee County DEI Commission. Kent, an assistant professor in the College of Human Medicine’s C.S. Mott Department of Public Health, works as a health disparities researcher. He uses community-engaged approaches to create community-driven solutions that advance health equity. He has been instrumental in addressing health disparities and gaps in research, which has contributed to the eradication of systemic inequities.

In an interview with FlintBeat.com in June 2020, Kent commented on the challenging circumstances of the time, stating, “The things...we’ve been experiencing, such as the water crisis, layered with COVID-19, layered with the inhumane and unjust killings of African Americans and other people of color when engaging with law enforcement…I think those were just the elements of a perfect storm brewing."

Kent is clear on his view of the American government's role, stating, “[O]ur country was founded on [racism]... So for people to say that they can’t see racism, it boggles me because I see it every day.” He further added, “Racism is the role of the government. It was built off it. The whole concept of police departments and all those things, if we follow the pathology of the history of some of these things, they all have racist undertones, or racist roots.”

Kent's perspective aligns with the growing focus on DEI in various institutions. From childcare chains advocating for babies to learn 'Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,' to universities requiring training that labels straight white males as 'oppressors' in the name of inclusivity, the DEI movement is gaining momentum.

One of the teams recognized at MSU's awards was responsible for the 'Know Your Rights Day' at Cass Tech High School in Detroit. The program was designed to educate young, predominantly Black and Hispanic students in Detroit about their constitutional rights and how to navigate potentially dangerous situations with the police. This initiative aligns with Kent's assertion that the police, and by extension, the government, are biased against nonwhites.

The question of whether the perceived racial bias in the government can be addressed remains unanswered. In the meantime, MSU, a government school, is awarding a social justice advocate who accuses it of having racially discriminatory intentions. The awards ceremony offered up to ten cash awards of $2,000 (pre-tax) to individuals and teams in categories other than Lifetime Achievement.

The DEI movement, which assesses individuals based on their race, has been criticized by some, including Elon Musk, who stated, "DEI is actually illegal because it discriminates on the basis of race, sex, sexual preference and all sorts of other things." Despite these criticisms, the movement continues to gain traction in various sectors, including academia.
