First Lady Jill Biden has brought the contentious issue of abortion to the forefront of the 2024 election season by extending an invitation to Kate Cox, a 32-year-old Texan woman who journeyed to a neighboring state to terminate her pregnancy of a special needs unborn child, to accompany her to the State of the Union address on March 7.

As previously reported by Blaze News, Cox discovered in November of last year that her unborn child, Chloe, was diagnosed with trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome. This diagnosis is daunting, and as recently as 2019, trisomy 18 was deemed "incompatible with life." However, the Support Organization for Trisomy board members recently revised this terminology to describe trisomy 18 as "life-limiting," acknowledging that some children with this condition have not only survived birth but have lived for several years.

Research from the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, as reported by Live Action, even suggests that with "aggressive" treatment, "90% of babies born with Edwards syndrome can go home from the hospital, and their five-year survival rate can reach close to 77%."

Despite these promising developments regarding trisomy 18, Cox, a mother of two other children with her husband, Justin, decided that carrying Chloe to term could potentially jeopardize her future fertility. After the Texas Supreme Court denied her an exemption from the state's fetal heartbeat law, Cox traveled to New Mexico, where the termination of unborn children is legally permissible with minimal restrictions.

The Bidens were moved by Cox's story of traversing the country to find a doctor willing to terminate her disabled unborn child. The President and First Lady personally reached out to Cox last month to express their support. During this call, Jill Biden extended an invitation to Cox to attend the SOTU, which Cox has since accepted. This invitation suggests that President Biden will reference Cox's story during his address, and Cox will be seated near Jill Biden in a position of honor.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, in discussing the phone call with reporters, inaccurately described unborn baby Chloe as a "nonviable pregnancy" that "threatened [Cox's] life," and labeled Texas' efforts to protect unborn children as "extreme."

Jean-Pierre stated, "It speaks to the moment that we are in now," when discussing women's right to make deeply personal decisions about their healthcare, which she believes was taken away by the Supreme Court.

With his approval ratings dwindling and the ongoing issue of illegal immigration, President Biden, a Catholic, is banking on his staunch support for unrestricted abortion rights until birth to secure his re-election in November. "As Trump proudly brags he was the one who got rid of , paving the way for Republican extremists across the country to pass draconian bans that are hurting women and threatening doctors … one in three women of reproductive age now live under an abortion ban," said a statement from Biden-Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez.

Former President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has embraced his legacy of ending . "For 54 years, they were trying to get terminated. And I did it and I'm proud to have done it," he stated at a town hall meeting in Iowa last month.
