Michael Cohen, a former lawyer and fixer for Donald Trump, has recently made claims that the former President harbored a long-standing dislike for his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.

This revelation comes in the wake of Trump's endorsement of Lara for the position of co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC).

Cohen shared his insights during a conversation with Ben Meiselas, co-founder of the left-leaning media outlet MeidasTouch. The discussion centered around Trump's recent endorsement of Michael Whatley, the RNC general counsel and chair of the North Carolina Republican Party, as well as Lara Trump.

In a statement released on Monday, Trump expressed his support for Whatley, stating, "I think my friend Michael Whatley should be the RNC’s next leader." He praised Whatley for his commitment to election integrity and his work in North Carolina. Trump also announced his daughter-in-law's agreement to run as the RNC co-chair, describing her as an "extremely talented communicator" dedicated to the MAGA cause.

Cohen, who was imprisoned for campaign finance violations and other crimes related to the 2016 campaign, offered a less flattering portrayal of Lara Trump. He claimed that Donald Trump had disliked her for many years and had even tried to dissuade his son Eric from marrying her. According to Cohen, Trump had preferred another woman working at the Trump Organization for Eric. Cohen also alleged that Trump, along with his other children, Donald Trump Jr and Ivanka, had mocked Lara's appearance.

Cohen further criticized the RNC's apparent alignment with Trump, arguing that the organization should represent all Republicans, not just Trump. The Independent has reached out to the Trump campaign for a response to these allegations.

Lara Trump married Eric Trump in 2014 at Mar-a-Lago. Cohen, who began working for the Trump Organization in 2006, turned against Trump in 2018 during a criminal investigation. He was sentenced to three years in prison but was released early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cohen has since testified against Trump in a business fraud case tied to a hush money payment to adult actor Stormy Daniels, who claimed to have had an affair with Trump. Trump has dismissed Cohen as a liar who cannot be trusted.

The current RNC chair, Ronna McDaniel, is expected to step down after the South Carolina Republican primary. Party rules stipulate that one woman and one man serve as co-chairs of the RNC, and Trump has reportedly been considering endorsing Lara Trump for the female co-chair position.

Lara Trump has been involved with the RNC for several years and has earned a reputation as a strong fundraiser. She also enjoys the trust of the Trump family, which closely monitors the use of campaign resources. Lara Trump considered running for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina in 2021.

McDaniel has faced pressure to resign for several months due to concerns about the RNC's finances ahead of the general election campaign. After meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he would make a decision about the RNC's future growth after the South Carolina Primary. McDaniel has reportedly been contemplating resignation for some time.

The RNC's primary responsibilities include mobilizing Republican voters and fundraising for the party. In 2016, the committee was forced to cooperate with Trump after his unexpected nomination and subsequent election victory. During the 2024 campaign, the Trump team is expected to attempt to fully absorb the committee.

McDaniel served as the chair of the Michigan Republican Party from 2015 to 2017 before taking over the national committee just a day before Trump's inauguration in January 2017. Her relationship with Trump began to deteriorate over disagreements about the Republican primary debates this campaign season, which featured Trump's challengers but not the former President himself.
