The return of Jon Stewart to "The Daily Show" on Monday night, after a long hiatus, sparked a wave of discontent among liberal journalists and commentators.

The cause of their ire was Stewart's humor directed at President Biden's age and perceived equivocation with former President Trump.

Stewart's comeback to the show, which he will host every Monday night until the 2024 election, was announced last month. This news was met with enthusiasm by many progressives, who fondly remember his 16-year tenure on the show from 1999 to 2015.

However, Stewart's reappearance on Monday stirred controversy among some online commentators, who expressed their displeasure at the comedian's jokes targeting President Biden.

Keith Olbermann, a former MSNBC host and current podcaster, expressed his disappointment in Stewart, stating, "Well after nine years away, there's nothing else to say to the bothsidesist fraud Jon Stewart bashing Biden, except: Please make it another nine years." Olbermann later labeled Stewart a "bulls--t bothsidesist."

Aaron Rupar, a far-left journalist and video clipper, commented, "Jon Stewart still has it in terms of being funny and entertaining but the political content of this monologue is basically the New York Times op-ed page in TV form. Both sides are not in fact equally bad!"

Christopher Webb, self-proclaimed "lifelong Dem," criticized Stewart's humor as "the laziest" for targeting the ages of Biden and Trump.

The Daily Beast, a left-wing publication, lamented in its article on Stewart's return, "So far, it seems that sway includes using his old platform to tell Americans that their two choices for president are both not that different and equally terrible."

Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, a staunch critic of former President Trump, described Stewart's commentary as a "boring, tired, not helpful, way too easy of a take."

Walsh wrote, "Come on. It is what it is. It’s Biden v Trump. A binary decision. We can spend our time b----ing about 'two old guys,' or we can spend our time making sure the one old guy - who’s also a traitorous psychopath who tried to overthrow an election - doesn’t win again. That’s what I’m focusing on."

However, during the show, Stewart clarified that Biden and Trump were not the same, stating, "Joe Biden isn't Donald Trump. He hasn't been indicted as many times, he hasn't had as many fraudulent businesses or been convicted in a civil trial for sexual assault or been ordered to pay defamation or had his charities disbanded or stiffed a s--t town of blue-collar tradesmen he'd hired."

Stewart also noted that the high stakes of the election made Biden more, not less, subject to scrutiny, particularly from progressives.

Stewart's return comes as the 2024 presidential race seems to be gearing towards a likely rematch between President Biden and former President Trump. Media progressives are already expecting Stewart to be another voice against Trump as the election intensifies.

Stewart, known for his left-leaning views, transformed "The Daily Show" into a cultural institution during the George W. Bush years. Many of the show's "correspondents," such as Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, and Steve Carell, have since become stars in their own right.

One of Stewart's most notable recent media appearances was in 2021 when he surprised his friend Colbert on "The Late Show" by endorsing the Coronavirus lab-leak theory.
