While the Biden administration grapples with the escalating crisis at the southern border, a surge of illegal immigrants crossing the northern border has sparked concerns among officials.

The public is being urged to report any suspicious activity, as the number of illegal crossings continues to rise at an alarming rate.

The Swanton Sector, which encompasses parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York, is under the jurisdiction of Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia. Based in Swanton, Vermont, Garcia has raised the alarm about the increasing number of illegal crossings. Since the beginning of the fiscal year 2024 on October 1, 2023, Border Patrol agents have apprehended more than 3,100 individuals from 55 countries, a figure that surpasses the combined total of the previous four years.

Garcia issued a stark warning about the "record-breaking surge of illegal entries from Canada" in the Swanton Sector. He urged the public to report any suspicious activity, emphasizing that such vigilance can lead to significant arrests. A case in point is a recent incident in Champlain, New York, where a report from a private citizen led to the arrest of 10 individuals from Bangladesh attempting to cross the border from Canada into the United States.

The escalating crisis at the northern border raises questions about the effectiveness of Vice President Kamala Harris's approach to addressing the root causes of illegal immigration. Despite her focus on the Northern Triangle - El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras - and promises of American taxpayer dollars for job programs, the situation at the border has worsened during Biden's term. It's important to note that the crisis is not solely due to immigrants from the Northern Triangle; illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border from over 160 countries worldwide.

The Biden administration's handling of the border situation has been widely criticized. The responsibility for the southern border was handed to Harris, whose efforts have been largely unsuccessful. The number of illegal aliens in the United States is now at a record high, and the northern border is also becoming a growing concern.

Data for January 2024 has not yet been released, but every month since the start of Fiscal Year 2022, which began in October 2021, the Swanton sector has seen more encounters than the same month the previous year. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) typically releases its monthly report updates late into the following month. The December numbers, which set a record high, were not released until the last Friday of January.

The Swanton Sector, which spans about 295 miles of the northern border, has seen 15 rescue missions involving 37 migrants since October 2022, according to the Times. Clinton County Sheriff David Favro, who has been involved in some of these missions, highlighted the need for more "boots on the ground" to monitor the northern border. Currently, an estimated 2,200 Border Patrol agents monitor the U.S.-Canada border, which at 5,525 miles, is the longest international border in the world.

Canadian government officials are reportedly considering imposing a visa requirement for Mexican travelers. This comes after Quebec Premier Francois Legault warned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month about the increasing number of asylum seekers, stating that city services were nearing a "breaking point."
