Texas Lawyer That Slipped Abortion-Inducing Drugs To Estranged Wife Receives Sentence

Herring, the founder and managing partner of the Herring Law Firm, was initially charged with felony assault to induce abortion.

Catherine Herring, his estranged wife who has initiated divorce proceedings, expressed her dissatisfaction with the sentence in court. "I do not believe that 180 days is justice for attempting to kill your child seven separate times," she stated. She revealed that their third child, a one-year-old girl, was born prematurely at 30 weeks and is currently experiencing developmental delays, requiring therapy eight times a week.

The couple was already separated and undergoing marriage counseling when Catherine announced her third pregnancy. Mason, who had begun a romantic relationship with a colleague, reacted negatively to the news. He told his wife that the pregnancy would disrupt his plans and tarnish his reputation, as per the affidavit.

In March 2022, Catherine reported that Mason began emphasizing the importance of hydration and started offering her cloudy water, attributing the murkiness to dirty cups or water pipes. After consuming the water, she fell severely ill, suffering from cramps and heavy bleeding, which led to hospitalization. Doctors were unable to diagnose her condition.

Growing suspicious, Catherine declined further drinks from Mason, including three containing an unidentified substance and a bottle of orange juice with a broken seal. She installed a camera in her home and invited two individuals over as witnesses during Mason's visit. During this visit, he allegedly attempted to offer her a drink despite her already having two beverages. Catherine and her guests noticed an unknown substance floating in the drink.

The next day, Catherine found a similar substance in a drink Mason brought from a fast-food restaurant. She later discovered packaging for misoprostol, a drug used to induce abortions, in the trash.

Mason's attorney, Dan Cogdell, deemed the plea deal and sentence reasonable. "It’s a sad situation and Mason has accepted his responsibility," Cogdell commented.
