Tucker Carlson, the renowned independent journalist, is reportedly at risk of facing sanctions for conducting an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Russian leader, who has previously been interviewed by major news outlets such as CNN, CBS, and NBC, is currently engaged in a tense standoff with neighboring Ukraine. Carlson, currently in Russia, has announced plans to release a video interview with Putin soon.

Belgian EU MP Guy Verhofstadt has reportedly urged the European Union to consider a "travel ban" on Carlson. Speaking to Newsweek, Verhofstadt stated, "As Putin is a war criminal and the EU sanctions all who assist him in that effort, it seems logical that the External Action Service examine his case as well."

Verhofstadt further accused Carlson of being a "mouthpiece" for Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election against the incumbent President Joe Biden. The US has been a significant financial supporter of Ukraine, with Biden proposing an additional $60 billion to the existing war fund of over $113 billion.

Former EU MEP Luis Garicano criticized Carlson, stating, "He is no longer a newsman, but a propagandist for the most heinous regime on European soil and the one which is most dangerous to our peace and security."

MEP Urmas Paet emphasized the gravity of Putin's crimes, stating, "First of all, it should be remembered that Putin is not just a president of an aggressor country, but he is wanted by the International Criminal Court and accused of genocide and war crimes."

According to Newsweek, for an individual to be added to the EU's sanctions list, evidence must be presented to the External Action Service (EAS) for review. If the evidence is deemed sufficient, the EAS can then present the case to the European Council, which comprises EU national leaders, for a final decision on imposing sanctions.

Carlson has also expressed interest in interviewing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, although this has not yet been confirmed. Despite the potential risks, Carlson maintains that his primary objective is to enlighten the public about the ongoing situation in the region.

"Two years into a war that's reshaping the entire world," Carlson stated, "most Americans are not informed. They have no real idea in this region, here in Russia or 600 miles away in Ukraine. They should know. They're paying for much of it in ways they might not yet fully perceive."
