In a late-night drone attack on Sunday, a military base in Syria's eastern province of Deir el-Zour, where U.S. troops are stationed, was targeted, resulting in the death of at least six Kurdish soldiers allied with the U.S., according to official reports.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led coalition, confirmed in a statement on Monday that the drone strike occurred at a training ground at the al-Omar base. The statement further clarified that the drone attack was aimed at an area where the commando units of the forces were undergoing training. However, no U.S. troops were reported to be killed or injured in the attack.

This strike marks the first significant attack in Syria or Iraq since the U.S. initiated strikes against Iran-backed militias over the weekend. These militia fighters have been launching attacks on U.S. forces and civilian targets in the region since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October.

Initially, the SDF attributed Sunday's attack to "Syrian regime-backed mercenaries." However, following an investigation, they pointed the finger at "Iran-backed militias." The Islamic Resistance, a collective of all Iran-backed Iraqi militias in the country, claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, releasing a video purportedly showing the launch of the drone used in the attack.

The drone attack on Sunday followed U.S. military strikes against Houthi militant targets in Yemen over the weekend. U.S. Central Command forces reported conducting a "self-defense" strike against a Houthi land attack cruise missile at approximately 5:30 a.m. Sanaa time on Sunday. Later, at around 10:30 a.m., U.S. forces targeted four anti-ship cruise missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, which were deemed to pose an "imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels" in the Red Sea.

These strikes occurred a day after the U.S. and Britain launched a series of strikes against 36 Houthi targets, aimed at diminishing their capabilities. In response, Houthi rebels pledged to escalate their own attacks, regardless of the sacrifices required.

Houthi spokesman Mohammed al-Bukhaiti stated on X, "The US-British coalition’s bombing of a number of Yemeni provinces will not change our position, and we affirm that our military operations against Israel will continue until the crimes of genocide in Gaza are stopped and the siege on its residents is lifted, no matter the sacrifices it costs us." He dismissed such attacks as "ineffective," and predicted that a broader war would lead to the end of U.S. dominance in the region.

The Islamic Resistance was also behind the January drone attack on Tower 22 of the logistics support base in Jordan, which resulted in the death of three U.S. service members and injured 40 others. The U.S. Defense Department identified the deceased soldiers as Sgt. William Jerome Rivers of Carrollton, Georgia; Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders of Waycross, Georgia; and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett of Savannah, Georgia. They were assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade, Fort Moore, Georgia.

Following the attack, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his outrage and deep sorrow over the deaths of the three U.S. service members and the wounding of other American troops. He said, "These brave Americans and their families are in my prayers, and the entire Department of Defense mourns their loss."

The Islamic Resistance has carried out numerous attacks, primarily using drones, against U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria, repeatedly calling for the withdrawal of American forces from the region.
