In the face of mounting primary threats, Democratic Representatives Cori Bush of Missouri and Jamaal Bowman of New York, both members of the progressive "Squad," have been outpaced in fundraising by their more moderate Democratic challengers.

Bush, an advocate for defunding the police who is currently under investigation by the Justice Department for allocating significant campaign funds to a security firm, was slightly out-raised by her primary opponent, attorney Wesley Bell. According to the latest Federal Election Commission filings, Bell garnered $492,149 in donations in the last quarter of 2023, slightly more than Bush's $487,000.

Bell, in a statement to The Hill, said, "Missouri’s 1st District deserves a representative who shows up, does the work and gets things done." He expressed gratitude for the growing list of endorsements from community members and local officials and was energized by the momentum of support propelling his campaign.

Bowman, who admitted to a misdemeanor for triggering an office fire alarm in the House – allegedly to delay a vote during the government shutdown debate – collected approximately $724,000 in the last quarter of 2023, as per the latest FEC filings. This pales in comparison to the $1.4 million raised by his challenger in New York’s 14th Congressional District, George Latimer.

Bill Neidhardt, a spokesperson for Bowman’s re-election campaign, told The Hill, "There is a fundamental weakness to Latimer’s fundraising. His connection to Republican Trump mega donors." He added, "His money won’t go as far in a Democratic primary where the electorate wants to hold Donald Trump accountable."

Latimer, a Westchester County Executive who entered the race in early December, visited Israel following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks to express solidarity with the Jewish state and secured the endorsement of AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Conversely, Bowman recently lost the endorsement of the progressive group J Street due to his controversial remarks about Israel's military campaign in Gaza.

Despite their fundraising challenges and contentious anti-Israel comments, Bush and Bowman remain formidable – and likely expensive – opponents as progressive incumbents. However, their potential defeat could indicate a shift towards the center within the Democratic Party in Congress.

Mark Mellman, a veteran Democratic pollster and leader of the Democratic Majority for Israel, told The Hill, "It’s a very small group to begin with," referring to the members of Congress considered part of the progressive Squad. "It would be good for the party and good for the country if it got smaller."

Meanwhile, other Squad members, including Representatives Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, continue to amass donations.
