Somaliland, an unrecognized state that Somalia considers part of its territory, has seen one of its government officials, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Rhoda Elmi, express profound shock at the comments made by Democratic Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Omar recently declared her primary allegiance to Somali interests, a statement that has sparked controversy.

In a recent public address, Omar, according to one interpretation, stated that Somalia was exclusively for Somalis and that they would liberate the territories under occupation that belong to Greater Somalia, including Somaliland. Elmi expressed her surprise and disappointment at these remarks, stating, "We were profoundly surprised, even shocked on discovering the remarks made by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D) of Minnesota in a recent public forum."

Elmi criticized Omar's comments as inappropriate for her position and her constituents. She said, "Her expressions were lacking in common decency and revealed a significant lack of understanding of basic facts." Elmi found Omar's attempts to revive the Greater Somalia or Somali Weyn ideology, which has previously caused death, destruction, and conflict in the Horn of Africa, particularly troubling.

Elmi also took issue with Omar's use of what she termed "ethno-racist rhetoric." She found it particularly perplexing given the similar racist attacks Omar herself had faced in the past. Elmi said, "It was particularly bewildering for those who recall similar racist attacks she endured not long ago, of being 'not American enough'," as Omar seemed to be taking a similar approach in accusing the entire Somaliland nation of 'falsely claiming Somali identity'."

Elmi also expressed shock at Omar's apparent ignorance of the cooperation between the US and Somaliland in combating terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Gulf of Berbera. She concluded by expressing hope that the House leadership and Omar's caucus would take note of her public conduct, which she deemed unbecoming of a United States Congresswoman.

Meanwhile, Omar defended her statements, claiming they were distorted by propagandists. The Associated Press reports that the United States does not formally recognize Somaliland and that the Biden administration supports Somali sovereignty, including in the separatist state. The proposed agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia could potentially see the latter establish a military base in the region.
