According to a newly obtained internal federal memo, federal authorities recently apprehended a terrorist at the southern border, only to release him into the United States where he remained free for approximately a year before being arrested in Minnesota.

The memo, obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, reveals that the individual in question is a member of the Somali terror group al-Shabaab. He was initially captured while attempting to enter the U.S. illegally near San Ysidro, California on March 13, 2023.

After running the individual's name through the terror watchlist, the Terrorist Screen Center determined that he was a "mismatch" and subsequently released him. However, on January 18, 2024, the center conducted a redetermination and confirmed that the man was indeed a member of al-Shabaab, involved in the use, manufacture, or transport of explosives or firearms.

The memo also highlights the concerning trend of terror watchlist suspects attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. During the 2023 fiscal year, a total of 172 individuals on the terror watchlist were apprehended while attempting to cross the border illegally. Between October and December 2023 alone, 50 people on the watchlist were caught at the border. This represents a significant increase compared to the 30 encounters recorded between fiscal years 2017 and 2020.
