Somali refugee and Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) delivered a speech to the Somali community in Minnesota on Saturday that has gained significant attention due to English translation subtitles.

The translations reveal Omar stating that she and her fellow Somalis prioritize their Somali identity over their Muslim identity, with no mention of their American identity. Additionally, Omar claimed to represent Somalia in Congress and asserted that the Somali community controls the U.S. government's Somalia policy.

The speech, which took place in Minneapolis on January 27, 2024, according to a banner visible in the video, has sparked controversy over Omar's remarks about Somali ethno-nationalism and her expressed desire to reclaim land from neighboring countries, including issues with Somaliland.

In response to the criticism, Omar posted a statement on Sunday, dismissing the translations as slanted and completely off. She emphasized the importance of unity among Somalis and their efforts to protect Somalia's territorial waters. Omar also expressed her solidarity with Somalis in Somalia and the diaspora, stating that no amount of harassment and lies would change their commitment to their country.

During the speech, Omar addressed the audience with confidence, stating that the U.S. government would do what Somalis tell it to do. She highlighted the significance of living in the United States, paying taxes, and having a Somali congresswoman representing them. Omar assured the audience that as long as she is in Congress, Somalia's territorial waters would not be taken by others, and the U.S. government would not support such actions.

The speech, which was captured in a video with English translation subtitles, has drawn reactions from interested parties, including those from Somaliland. One individual highlighted Omar's reference to "missing territories" and criticized her Somali irredentism ideology, linking it to the Isaaq Genocide committed by her father, who was a military officer in Siyad Barre's army. The individual also mentioned the support provided by Ethiopian and Kenyan soldiers in Somalia's fight against Al-Shabaab.

The Somaliland Foreign Ministry expressed profound surprise and disappointment at Omar's remarks. They criticized her use of language, which they deemed lacking in common decency and indicative of a significant lack of understanding of basic facts. The ministry specifically highlighted Omar's revival of the ideology of Greater Somalia or Somali Weyn, which had caused death, destruction, and conflict in the Horn of Africa. They also criticized her use of ethno-racist rhetoric and her ignorance of U.S.-Somaliland cooperation in combating terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Gulf of Berbera.

Omar's speech has also drawn criticism from Americans. Some individuals, such as Chaya Raichik, have accused Omar of hating America. Attorney Marina Medvin pointed out that Omar identified herself as Somali first, Muslim second, without mentioning her American identity. Medvin also highlighted Omar's claim that her primary job in Congress is to protect Somali interests. Journalist Alessandra Bocchi expressed concern over Omar's rhetoric, stating that it closely resembled the "blood and soil" rhetoric associated with white supremacists. Bocchi also accused Omar of engaging in unethical conduct in her role as a U.S. congresswoman, which she deemed tantamount to treason.

The controversy surrounding Omar's speech has led to calls for her expulsion from Congress. Some individuals have questioned why Republicans have not taken action to remove her from office, citing her alleged treasonous conduct.
