In a recent development, Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential candidate, has criticized Donald Trump, the GOP frontrunner, for his efforts to further postpone a bipartisan border agreement that has been stalled in Congress for an extended period.

"Donald Trump, the last thing he needs to do is tell them to wait to pass the border deal until the election. We can't wait one more day," Haley expressed on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Haley's statement echoes the growing demand for Congress to expedite and finalize an agreement on border security. However, conspicuously absent from this chorus is Trump. He has been actively encouraging GOP lawmakers to reject the border bill unless it fulfills every requirement on the Republican party's agenda.

"Please blame it on me, please, because they were getting ready to pass a very bad bill. I'd rather have no bill than a bad bill," Trump declared at a Las Vegas rally on Saturday.

By deferring the agreement during an election year, Trump can continue to attribute the ongoing border crisis to President Joe Biden, his probable adversary in the 2024 general election, thereby preserving a crucial campaign talking point.

Since Biden initially proposed an emergency funding package in October to aid Ukraine and Israel and fortify the U.S. southern border, Republican and Democratic lawmakers have been locked in a tug-of-war over the deal. The border issue has emerged as the primary obstacle, causing a stalemate in the package's progress.

Despite the impasse, Congress members have assured that they are inching towards a resolution. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut reiterated on Sunday that the deal's text could be finalized within the forthcoming weeks. However, Biden and other officials have consistently urged lawmakers to accelerate their negotiations.

As the border crisis continues to simmer, it has become a pivotal voting issue in the 2024 presidential race, with Biden receiving unfavorable poll ratings.

Meanwhile, the border crisis has escalated as record numbers of migrants undertake the perilous journey to the U.S. This influx has overwhelmed cities nationwide, which claim they lack the necessary infrastructure to provide basic amenities for the incoming migrants.

House Republicans have been attempting to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the border crisis, which they argue is a neglect of his duty. On Sunday, they unveiled their formal articles of impeachment, marking the next phase in the impeachment effort.
