In a series of recent incidents, U.S. Border Patrol agents have apprehended two child sex offenders, a convicted murderer, and a felon attempting to illegally cross the U.S. border.

These arrests underscore the ongoing challenges faced by border security forces in managing illegal immigration.

Jason Owens, Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, shared images of two men on a social media platform, stating, "USBP agents in Del Rio, TX & Rio Grande Valley, TX nabbed two child sex offenders with prior felony convictions." He further added, "These subjects were caught trying to re-enter the U.S. illegally. Agents being out on patrol is what stopped them from getting to your communities. #HonorFirst"

John Modlin, Chief Patrol Agent of the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson Sector, also reported the apprehension of two other individuals. "Tucson Sector agents apprehended two migrants for unlawful entry into the U.S. Both subjects have alarming felony convictions. One for 2nd Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, and the other for Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Both face federal prosecution," Modlin stated.

These arrests come in the wake of a report by Customs and Border Protection that the Border Patrol has encountered 634,066 illegal immigrants attempting to cross the US border since October. Among these, 50 individuals were listed on the terror watchlist.

In response to the escalating border crisis, President Biden has pledged to secure the border, contingent on Congress granting him new emergency powers. These powers would enable him to close the border when it becomes "overwhelmed." In addition, a Senate Bill proposes to bolster border security with "an additional 1,300 border patrol agents, 375 immigration judges, 1,600 asylum officers, and over 100 cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect and stop fentanyl at our southwest border," according to Biden.

However, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson argued that President Biden should not wait for Congressional approval to address the border crisis. In a social media post, Johnson stated, "As I explained to him in a letter late last year, and have specifically reiterated to him on multiple occasions since, he can and must take executive action immediately to reverse the catastrophe he has created."

Johnson noted that the Immigration and Nationality Act, along with recent Supreme Court precedent, provides the President with "ample authority" to "suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate." He suggested that President Biden could begin to secure the border by ending catch-and-release, ceasing exploitation of parole authority, reinstating the Remain in Mexico program, expanding the use of expedited removal authority, and renewing construction of the border wall.
