In a surprising turn of events, Tucker Carlson, a prominent figure in the United States, left a voicemail for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, stating, "We are coming to liberate Canada.

We are coming to liberate Canada, and we'll be there soon. Mercí.".

This message was relayed via a prank call to Canada's press office. The incident elicited a reaction from Elon Musk, the CEO of X, who expressed his amusement and approval with fire emojis.

Carlson's message comes ahead of his scheduled visit to Calgary, Alberta, where he is set to share a platform with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at the Telus Convention Center on January 24. In addition to his joint appearance with Smith, Carlson is also expected to engage in discussions with local businessmen.

However, Carlson's impending visit has not been without controversy. In November 2023, a petition was initiated to prevent Carlson from entering Canada, garnering 3,912 signatures out of a targeted 5,000. Carlson's vocal support for the Freedom Convoy, a movement that has been a source of irritation for Trudeau, has further fueled the controversy.

When questioned about Smith's decision to share a stage with Carlson, a figure who has sparked considerable debate in Canada, Smith's office responded, "The premier participates in a variety of public and private events and does interviews with dozens of reporters, broadcasters and podcasters from across the political spectrum." They further distanced themselves from Carlson's views, stating, "Obviously, she does not subscribe to every view of every interviewer or reporter she speaks with whether that's the CBC, the Toronto Star, or Tucker Carlson."

Carlson's visit has also been met with resistance from NDP Leader Rachel Notley, who criticized Carlson as an "incredible figure." Notley expressed her disapproval of Smith's decision to share a stage with Carlson, stating, "The fact that our premier believes it's appropriate to normalize the things this person would say by appearing on a stage with him demonstrates a profound lack of judgment on her part." She urged Smith to cancel the planned appearance, arguing that "Albertans deserve better from their leadership."

Despite the backlash, Smith's office sees no reason to forgo the opportunity to interact with "an individual who has the largest podcast audience probably in the world." Smith aims to use this platform to "tell Alberta's story."
