In a recent interview, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu expressed his belief that Nikki Haley, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, does not need to secure a victory in the Granite State to succeed in the 2024 election cycle.

This statement comes despite recent polls indicating that Haley is trailing by double digits.

Sununu, who had previously predicted that Haley could triumph in New Hampshire, argued that she would not need to start outperforming former President Donald Trump until Super Tuesday. "She doesn’t have to win. I mean, nobody goes from single digits in December to you absolutely have to win in January,” the Republican governor told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Sununu further argued that the mere possibility of Haley's victory is significant, considering Trump's previous claims of winning all 50 states. He also highlighted that Haley would have a month to strengthen her position in South Carolina.

On the same day, Haley received a significant endorsement from New Hampshire’s Union Leader newspaper. However, two new polls released on Sunday showed Haley lagging behind Trump in the Republican primary for New Hampshire. A CNN poll found Trump with 50% support, followed by Haley at 39% and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 6%. A similar survey conducted by Suffolk University, NBC10 in Boston, and the Boston Globe showed Trump leading with 55%, Haley at 36%, and DeSantis at 6%.

The most recent RealClearPolitics aggregate of polling reflects a similar gap, with Trump at 50.3%, Haley at 34%, and DeSantis at 6.3% in New Hampshire. In December, Trump stood at 45.6% while Haley was at 18.6%.

In her home state of South Carolina, Haley is also trailing significantly with 21.8% support, far behind Trump’s 52%. When asked about South Carolina, Sununu replied, “It’s really a month away.”

Between the New Hampshire primary and South Carolina, there is a contest in Nevada and the low delegate Virgin Islands caucus. Nevada is hosting a contentious GOP contest that will feature both a primary and a caucus. Haley has chosen to compete in the primary, despite the caucus having the actual delegates.

Sununu contended that Super Tuesday, which will include 16 Republican contests and around a third of available delegates, is likely the point where candidates need to start winning states. He also dismissed Trump’s assertion of presidential immunity, which his lawyers are arguing in an appeals court to dismiss his four-count 2020 election indictment.

Trump had stressed at a rally in Manchester that presidents should have immunity to act and do what they feel is necessary. He argued that without such immunity, presidents would be rendered impotent. Sununu expressed concern over this mentality, stating, “Everybody should be concerned with that type of mentality going into the White House.”

Despite his criticisms of Trump, Sununu defended his previous statement that he would support the eventual Republican nominee, even if it were Trump. He blamed President Biden's perceived incompetence for this stance. He also emphasized the importance of defeating Trump in the Republican primary through voting, rather than relying on external factors or court cases.
