A Google software engineer, Liren Chen, is facing murder charges following the gruesome discovery of his wife's body at their home in Santa Clara, California, according to local law enforcement.

The Santa Clara District Attorney's Office confirmed that police were summoned to the residence after a concerned acquaintance of Chen's dialed 911 on January 16.

The acquaintance reported a disturbing sight of Chen, seen through a window, kneeling motionless with his hands raised. Despite attempts to contact him, Chen reportedly did not respond to phone calls or knocks at the door.

Upon gaining entry to the home, police found Chen at the scene with a severely swollen and discolored right hand. His wife, Xuanyi Yu, was found dead, her body bearing signs of severe blunt force trauma to the head.

Chen, also 27, was found covered in blood, with visible scratches on his arm. The couple, both employees of Google, lived just a few miles south of the tech giant's Silicon Valley headquarters.

In a statement, District Attorney Jeff Rosen addressed the broader issue of domestic violence, urging anyone who feels they or someone else is being abused to reach out to local law enforcement. "Domestic violence deaths have been falling in our county but that does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence," Rosen said.

Google spokesperson Bailey Tomson expressed the company's shock and sadness over the incident. "We are shocked and deeply saddened by what has happened to Xuanyi," Tomson said. "Our thoughts are with her family at this time, and we will work to provide support to them and to co-workers who are processing this tragic news."

Both Chen and Yu were alumni of Tsinghua University in China and the University of California San Diego, according to their LinkedIn profiles.
