In a recent press conference, President Biden contradicted Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by stating that the U.S.-Mexico border is not secure.

This statement came after Biden expressed his support for "massive changes" in immigration policy.

When questioned about the security of the border following his address to a bipartisan group of mayors in the White House East Room, Biden responded, "No, it’s not."

During his address, the President expressed his hope for Senate negotiators to reach a compromise on border policy next week. This compromise is part of a larger $106 billion supplemental spending request that would also finance military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

"I believe we need significant policy changes at the border, including changes in our asylum system to ensure that we have the authorities we need to control the border. I’m ready to act," stated Biden.

He then posed a challenge to House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans, asking, "Are they ready to act as well?" He further added, "They have to choose whether they want to solve a problem or keep weaponizing the issue to score political points against the president. I’m ready to solve the problem. I really am. Massive changes, and I mean it sincerely."

The potential changes in asylum policy that could be acceptable to the White House, Senate Democrats, and House Republicans remain unclear. The current administration policy allows nearly all migrants who illegally cross the border to enter the US to await backlogged asylum proceedings, which entitles them to work permits after an initial wait period.

Upon assuming office in 2021, Biden terminated former President Donald Trump’s "Remain in Mexico" policy, which mandated most asylum seekers to wait for their case rulings while remaining south of the border.

Mayorkas, whose Department of Homeland Security oversees border policy, provoked outrage among Republicans last spring by repeatedly asserting "the border is secure" as record numbers of foreigners crossed illegally.

Despite seemingly rejecting Mayorkas’ claims, Biden defended his DHS chief when questioned about House Republican efforts to impeach and remove him, stating, "I don’t get it."

Biden demonstrated a readiness to take a hard line on illegal immigration as polls indicate low approval ratings for his management of the migrant crisis. December witnessed a record high in illegal crossings, culminating in a record-breaking year.

"I love how I turned on [TV] and, ‘Biden is for a free and open border, just tear down everything — everybody come, no restrictions,'" the president sarcastically commented during his speech.

Biden also defended his record, citing reform legislation he sent to Congress in 2021 that would legalize most migrants currently in the US illegally. He also mentioned an October request for additional border security funds after fiscal year 2023, which ended on September 30, saw a record number of unlawful crossings.
