In a recent meeting with President Biden and fellow legislators, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer disclosed that while progress is being made towards a bipartisan agreement on aid for Ukraine and the crisis at the southern border, there remains a significant amount of work to be completed.

Schumer emphasized that his party would only endorse additional funding for border security measures if Republicans consented to pass it in conjunction with increased financial aid for Ukraine, currently under the leadership of President Zelensky and embroiled in conflict.

Schumer initiated the discussion by declaring it "essential" for the government to persist in funding Ukraine's war efforts. He then highlighted that the meeting also addressed the border crisis, stating, "The president himself said over and over again that he is willing to move forward on [the] border. We have to do both."

Schumer reported that some attendees suggested prioritizing the border issue. However, he countered, "We have to do both together. The only way we will do border and Ukraine, or even either of them, is bipartisan."

Schumer underscored the necessity of bipartisan cooperation in a divided Congress, stating, "You cannot, cannot do things with one party... and so anyone who says, any party who says 'do it my way or no way,' we're not gonna get anything done."

He asserted that there was a "broad agreement in the room" for a bipartisan resolution and that the Senate was "making really good progress."

"I am more optimistic now that we can come to an agreement on border and Ukraine in one package, along with aid to Israel, along with humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza, and along with helping us Indochina," Schumer expressed, estimating the probability of success at "a little bit greater than half."

He concluded by expressing hope to fund the government this week, followed by swift action on the supplemental if an agreement is reached.
