President Biden plans to send an unofficial delegation to Taiwan following the island's upcoming elections, a move that is expected to provoke China.

The White House has not disclosed the details of the delegation, as reported by NBC News. Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

The election in Taiwan, scheduled for January 13th, could have significant implications for the island's relationship with mainland China. Lai Ching-te, one of the presidential candidates, is a strong advocate for Taiwanese independence. In response, Beijing has issued a statement urging Taiwanese voters not to support him. Lai, who currently serves as vice president, is leading in the election polls.

China has previously reacted with military actions when the United States sends delegations to Taiwan. For instance, when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island in 2022, China conducted live-fire military exercises in the surrounding area for weeks. Similar displays of force were seen last year when Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.

During his year-end address on New Year's Eve, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated his commitment to reunifying Taiwan with mainland China. He warned that China could resort to using force, stating, "All Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The motherland will surely be reunified."

Taiwan separated from mainland China in 1949 when democratic forces fled to the island after losing a civil war against the Chinese Communist Party. The issue of Taiwan's status has remained a contentious topic between China and the international community ever since.
