The slip of the tongue occurred during the House Judiciary Committee's deliberation of a resolution that could potentially lead to a full House vote on holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a congressional subpoena. This subpoena was part of the impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
Jayapal stated, "I think we're all outraged about many things, but if we're gonna talk about outrageous things that have happened or things that have never happened, let's talk about the fact that President Trump incited an erection." Upon realizing her error, she laughed it off, saying, "Maybe that, too."

Her Republican colleague, Rep. Dan Bishop, joined in the humor, saying, "You can talk about that too, I guess." Jayapal responded, "Maybe we should talk about that, too," before correcting herself, "The president incited an insurrection."

This isn't the first time a Democrat has made this particular verbal error. In January 2021, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, while advocating for Trump's impeachment trial, stated that the former president was responsible for an "erection." He quickly corrected himself, saying, "Make no mistake, there will be a trial and when that trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the erection – insurrection – against the United States."

Similarly, Rep. Adam Schiff, another Democrat, has also used the word "erection" instead of "insurrection" when discussing Trump's actions on January 6, 2021. During a November 2021 appearance on "The View," Schiff said, "But let’s not use that as a smokescreen to somehow shield Donald Trump’s culpability for inviting Russia to help him in the election, which they did, for trying to coerce Ukraine into helping him in the next election, which he did, into inciting an erection…" He immediately corrected himself and continued his comments. Schiff made a similar mistake during a January 2021 appearance on CNN.
