In a preemptive move to safeguard nearly 2,000 undocumented immigrants from an impending storm, New York City officials have initiated their evacuation from a tent shelter at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.

The evacuees are being relocated to James Madison High School, as the city braces for severe weather conditions, including torrential rains and winds of up to 70 mph, expected to hit on Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday.

The New York Post reports that the undocumented immigrants had been residing in a large tent at the exposed airfield, which is now deemed unsafe due to the approaching storm.

City Hall spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak clarified the reasons behind the move, stating, "To be clear, this relocation is a proactive measure being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety and wellbeing of individuals working and living at the center."

Mamelak further added, "The families are already in the process of being temporarily relocated and will continue to be provided with essential services and support. The relocation will continue until any weather conditions that may arise have stabilized and the facility is once again fit for living.”

New York City councilmember Inna Vernikov, in a press release, revealed that the undocumented immigrants would be housed in the gymnasium and auditorium of James Madison High School overnight.

Vernikov criticized the decision to use Floyd Bennett Field as a shelter, stating, "This is both unacceptable and was entirely foreseeable, as Floyd Bennett Field is vulnerable to all forms of inclement weather conditions and is not a sustainable housing facility. This emergency move was accurately predicted by critics of the Floyd Bennett Field as a location to be used as a migrant shelter."

She further emphasized that public schools are intended for the education and development of children, not as emergency housing facilities.

Vernikov also noted that students were dismissed early on Tuesday and would be attending classes remotely on Wednesday. However, New York Public Schools announced that all other schools would remain open and operate as per the usual schedule.

This development follows New York City Mayor Eric Adams' recent announcement of a $700 million lawsuit against 17 charter bus companies. The Mayor accused these companies of violating state law by not covering the costs associated with the care of approximately 34,000 undocumented immigrants transported from the southern border to New York City over the past 20 months.

The Mayor stated that the city had incurred nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in expenses due to this influx. He also revealed that over 100,000 undocumented immigrants have arrived in the city, and in late 2023, he declared that "Everything’s on the table" when discussing potential budget cuts to offset these costs. He added, "But we want to minimize the impact to lower-income New Yorkers, our educational institutions, our public safety, and keeping our city streets. But everything’s on the table.”
