In a recent interview with CNN, former Vice President Mike Pence dismissed allegations that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had a role in the January 6, 2021, protest at the US Capitol.

Pence, who served under former President Donald Trump, stated, "I take them at their word," referring to the FBI's denial of involvement in the riot.

Pence's comments came in response to claims from some members of the Republican Party that the FBI instigated the riot. He praised the federal agency for its efforts in charging over 1,000 protesters involved in the incident. "I've seen the director of the FBI repeatedly assure the American people that the FBI were not the instigators of the riot that occurred on January 6," Pence told CNN's Jake Tapper. He added, "Frankly, I'm very grateful for the efforts of the FBI to bring nearly a thousand people to justice who ransacked our Capitol and did violence against police officers that day."

Pence's stance starkly contrasts with the majority of the GOP, who believe that the FBI played a part in the riot. This belief largely stems from the incident involving Ray Epps, a man who was filmed encouraging Trump supporters to enter the Capitol on January 6. Epps initially appeared on the FBI's most-wanted list for the January 6 incident but was later removed, sparking suspicion.

Epps was also one of the first protesters to instigate violence on January 6 by tearing down a police barrier and pushing through a police line to get closer to the Capitol. Despite evidence suggesting Epps was a key instigator of violence that day, he received a six-month prison sentence, while other defendants who committed less serious offenses received multiple years in prison. This has led to speculation that Epps was sentenced merely to quell allegations that he is a federal agent.

Billionaire biotech entrepreneur and Republican presidential candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, referred to the three-year anniversary of the January 6 riot as "Entrapment Day." He shared a series of statements on the matter, stating, "Steve D'Antuono, the FBI chief overseeing the Detroit field office during the Gretchen Whitmer fake kidnapping plot – where 5 men were acquitted due to FBI entrapment – was promoted in Fall 2020 to lead the Washington, DC FBI field office…three months before Jan 6." Ramaswamy also criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray for refusing to disclose how many informants or undercover agents were present in the crowd on January 6.

In the nearly two years since the events of January 6, 2021, the Department of Justice under President Joe Biden has been actively identifying, arresting, and punishing those involved. Over 1,200 people have been apprehended in connection with the incident. According to data from the DOJ reviewed by the Washington Examiner, by the end of 2023, nearly 850 years of prison time will have been handed down to around 450 defendants. While the majority have received sentences of only a few days, others found guilty of more serious offenses face years, and in some cases decades, behind bars.

Former President Donald Trump, who is currently the Republican frontrunner in the 2024 presidential primary election, referred to the January 6 political prisoners as "hostages" and called on President Biden to release them. Trump has also suggested that the FBI had a role in the riot, according to the New York Post.

The relationship between Pence and Trump soured after Pence refused to comply with Trump's request not to certify the results of the 2020 election on January 6. Pence, the former governor of Indiana, launched a presidential bid last year but withdrew in October.
