Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, has refuted allegations made in a recent Wall Street Journal report suggesting that his drug use has raised concerns among his companies' board members.

Musk took to his social media platform, X, early Monday to respond to the report.

"TMZ has vastly higher standards than the WSJ (actually)," Musk posted, seemingly belittling the Wall Street Journal by comparing it to TMZ, a website known for its sensational gossip.

Musk's attorney, Alex Spiro, defended the South African entrepreneur in a conversation with the Journal, stating that Musk is "regularly and randomly drug tested at SpaceX and has never failed a test."

The report alleges that Musk's preferred drug is ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic known for its hallucinogenic effects. Musk's public use of drugs has previously caused controversy. In 2018, he was seen smoking marijuana with controversial podcaster Joe Rogan during a show recording in California, where cannabis is legal. This incident reportedly led to a drop in Tesla's share prices.

The Journal's report also includes claims from witnesses who allege that Musk has used LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms, often at private, exclusive parties worldwide. Attendees at these parties are required to sign non-disclosure agreements and surrender their phones to prevent photographs from being taken.

The report cites instances of Musk's drug use, including taking multiple tabs of acid at a party he hosted in Los Angeles in 2018, consuming magic mushrooms at an event in Mexico in 2019, and recreationally using ketamine with his brother at a house party in Miami in 2021.

The Journal also claims that Musk has taken drugs with Steve Jurvetson, a current SpaceX and former Tesla board member. Concerns are now reportedly growing among those close to Musk, who fear that his drug use could lead to a health or business crisis.

SpaceX is currently the only U.S. company approved to transport NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station. However, illegal drug use could potentially violate federal policies, putting SpaceX's billions of dollars in government contracts at risk.

The Journal reports that Musk's drug use and the erratic behavior it can trigger have already led to high-level resignations within his companies. Linda Johnson Rice, a former Tesla director, reportedly grew increasingly concerned about Musk's drug use and his behavior, leading her not to seek re-election to the company's board in 2019.

In 2017, concerns about Musk's drug use escalated when he reportedly slurred his words and rambled incoherently for fifteen minutes during a SpaceX meeting about the Big Falcon Rocket prototype. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell reportedly had to take over the meeting, and executives later privately discussed their concerns about Musk's possible drug use.

Last week, a U.S. labor agency accused SpaceX of unlawfully firing employees who wrote an open letter criticizing CEO Elon Musk and creating an impression that the company was monitoring worker activities. The National Labor Relations Board's Los Angeles-based regional director filed a complaint consolidating eight unfair labor practice charges against SpaceX.

The charges stem from the company's alleged actions following the circulation of the employees' letter in June 2022. The letter called on executives to condemn Musk's public behavior on X, then known as Twitter, and hold everyone accountable for unacceptable conduct. The letter also referred to Musk's actions as a "frequent source of distraction and embarrassment."

Nine employees were reportedly fired for their involvement in the letter, according to a November 2022 filing made on behalf of one of the employees to the NLRB, although only eight are included in Wednesday’s complaint.
