In a recent interview, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 83, made a startling suggestion that left even seasoned ABC "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos taken aback.

Pelosi proposed that individual states could override the U.S. Constitution to prevent Donald Trump from appearing on the presidential ballot.

Pelosi's appearance on "This Week" was primarily to discuss Trump's appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep his name on the Colorado ballot. However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when she made her controversial suggestion.

"He incited an insurrection," Pelosi, a Democrat from California, told Stephanopoulos, referring to the riot that occurred three years ago. "I'm proud of the national anthem. And in it, it says 'proof through the night that our flag was still there.' We have to prove through this campaign in the night that our flag is still there with liberty and justice for all and not have an acceptance of Confederate flags under [the] Lincoln dome [at the Capitol] with a president sitting in the White House doing nothing to stop the violence," she added. "He talks about the big steal as he can engages in the big lie."

Stephanopoulos seemed taken aback by Pelosi's suggestion, asking her to clarify her stance on Trump's eligibility to run for president under the 14th Amendment. Pelosi responded, "[Unitelligible] up to the states. They have different laws from state to state. I don't think he should have been president. But nonetheless, [unintelligible] there's a view of the Constitution — Article 14, Section 3 — that says he should not be able to run for president, but that's not the point."

Pelosi continued, "The point now is, again ... different states have different laws. We don't think in California that it applies, um, in our state. ... But anyway ... that's very intricate. What is very clear is that the American people want us to honor our oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

In essence, Pelosi suggested that to protect and defend the Constitution, Democrat-led states should "overrule" it and ban Donald Trump from running for president in those states. This reasoning, which could be dubbed "Pelosi logic," left many viewers puzzled.

Pelosi's comments during the interview were somewhat vague and speculative, but they seemed to reflect a common strategy among Democrats when it comes to the U.S. Constitution: selectively embracing or ignoring parts of the document to suit their needs. In this case, Pelosi appeared to be advocating for a radical interpretation of the Constitution that would allow states to ban Trump from the 2024 presidential election. This is a significant stance, even for a seasoned politician like Pelosi.
