In a shocking turn of events, the Taliban, who assumed control of Afghanistan following the abrupt withdrawal of American troops by President Joe Biden, are now allegedly seeking access to nuclear weapons.

The hasty retreat of the U.S. military, which resulted in the loss of over a dozen American lives, left behind a vast cache of American war machinery and thousands of civilians.

The Taliban's takeover was swift and comprehensive, with the fleeing of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani marking their victory. The U.S. had stockpiled war machinery in the country for years, all of which fell into the hands of the Taliban. Biden's plan was labeled an "unmitigated disaster" by Congressional leaders.

A report from the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has now shed light on the Taliban's nuclear ambitions. The report states, "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA, i.e., the Afghan Taliban) is caught in an international controversy after it has come to light that an eight-member official Taliban delegation secretly visited North Korea to discuss cooperation on nuclear weapons technology."

The report further reveals that Afghanistan has a long-standing nuclear energy program that was taken over by the Taliban when they assumed control in August 2021. This fact has largely gone unnoticed.

Rahmatullah Nabil, the former chief of Afghanistan's intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, voiced his concerns at a recent conference. "I have reports indicating that a group of the Taliban is looking into how to access tactical nuclear weapons. Whether they can get them from Pakistan or pay engineers to get them. That is going to be a disaster," he stated.

While Nabil's comments were initially dismissed by many due to his political opposition to the Taliban, they have since gained credibility. On December 26, 2023, Sami Yousafzai, a senior Afghan journalist known for authoritative reports on Afghanistan and Pakistan, tweeted about the Taliban's attempts to acquire nuclear weapons. This tweet has prompted several Western intelligence agencies to investigate the Taliban's connections to North Korea, as reported by MEMRI.

The Taliban delegation that visited North Korea reportedly included several leaders from the Taliban's ministry of defense and Maulvi Abdul Rasheed Munib, the security chief of Kandahar. The visit was shrouded in secrecy, and Taliban officials have remained tight-lipped about it.

The report also highlights that Afghanistan's neighbors, Iran, Russia, Pakistan, and China, all have friendly relations with Afghanistan. Russia, Pakistan, and China are all nuclear-armed nations.

This alarming development underscores the potential global security threats posed by the Taliban's control of Afghanistan and their alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons.
