In 2023, Xi embarked on a purge of more than a dozen top-ranking officials from China's People's Liberation Army and Rocket Force. Some of these officials mysteriously disappeared in the months preceding or following their dismissal.
According to sources close to the matter, Xi's drastic actions were aimed at eradicating rampant corruption and graft within his military ranks, which had severely undermined China's military strength. One glaring example of this corruption was the construction of a series of Chinese missile silos, so poorly built that they were incapable of launching missiles. In some instances, missiles were rendered useless as their fuel tanks were filled with water instead of fuel.

Further instances of corruption included the leaking of sensitive information to external entities and conflicts of interest in the procurement of bids for certain companies. The extent of the corruption has reportedly inflicted such severe damage on the People's Liberation Army (PLA) that it is unlikely Xi will initiate a significant military operation in the foreseeable future. The Rocket Force, which would play a pivotal role in any potential invasion of Taiwan, is considered the most compromised.

On December 29, China's legislative branch, the National People's Congress, dismissed nine defense officials, some of whom were part of the PLA's missile or armament corps. This followed the termination of three state-missile developers by China's legislative advisory just days earlier.

In October, General Li Shangfu, the former defense minister and Rocket Force commander, was relieved of his duties. His disappearance in the months before and after his dismissal was followed by the expulsion of another Rocket Force Commander in November. This series of dismissals is believed to be the most significant military shakeup in China's modern history.

Despite these revelations, U.S. intelligence continues to grapple with understanding the inner workings of Beijing's government and Xi's long-term plans. A former senior intelligence official recently admitted to the Wall Street Journal, "We have no real insight into leadership plans and intentions in China at all." The White House National Security Council has yet to respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
