Critics suggest that her actions are so outrageous they could inspire a real-life version of the television show "Parks and Recreation."
Henyard, a Democrat, has been accused of using public funds for personal luxuries, including a first-class flight to Las Vegas, excessive security measures, and personalized billboards. In addition to her role as mayor, Henyard also serves as the Thornton Township Supervisor. She has been criticized for hiring DJs for town meetings, filming music videos with police officers, and employing a professional stylist for community events.
Despite the controversy, Henyard remains undeterred, frequently posting influencer-style videos and photos on her Instagram and TikTok accounts. She often captions her posts with the phrase "God chose me" and describes herself as "The Most Powerful Woman in The Southland of Chicago" in her Instagram bio.

Her audacious behavior has attracted considerable attention on social media. "There's a real-life Parks and Rec situation going on in a small village outside of Chicago thanks to this mayor, Tiffany Henyard," said Jack Mac of Barstool Sports in a TikTok video.

The scrutiny of Henyard's spending habits began in earnest last year when local media outlets Fox 32 and WGN9 started investigating her expenditures. According to credit card statements obtained by WGN9, taxpayers paid $3,741 for Henyard's roundtrip flight to a shopping center conference in Las Vegas. Additional expenses from the trip included over $8,400 on hotels, $587 at Ruth's Chris Steak House, and nearly $400 at Hot N’ Juicy Crawfish. When questioned about the trip by a local reporter, Henyard simply responded, "Any other questions?"

Furthermore, several billboards featuring Henyard's face and name have been erected throughout Dolton, a town of approximately 20,000 residents with a median annual income of $24,000. These billboards, paid for by the city, advertise "Fresh Produce," "Senior Services," and "General Assistance."

It remains unclear whether Henyard pays for the makeup artist and stylist featured prominently on her social media out of her own pocket. In addition to the controversy over her spending, Henyard has also faced criticism for a contentious salary ordinance she proposed for Thornton Township. Critics argue that the ordinance, which would significantly reduce her salary if she were not reelected, is a strategy to deter potential challengers.

Henyard, who earns a combined salary of $285,000 from her two positions, proposed a nearly 90% cut to her salary if someone else wins her spot in the next election. However, if she is reelected, her salary would remain unchanged. The ordinance, which also reduces the salaries of other non-incumbent elected officials in the township, was passed in December.
Henyard has not yet responded to The Post regarding the backlash and her spending habits. However, she has defended herself on social media, stating in one post, "There's no such thing as a 'one-sided story.' Know the facts!!"
