Taiwan's Defense Ministry has reported the intrusion of several Chinese reconnaissance flights into the island's airspace.

The ministry detected a single spy flight on Monday, followed by an additional three on Tuesday. This comes just days ahead of a critical presidential election that is expected to significantly impact China-Taiwan relations.

Major General Sun Li-fang, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry, addressed the media on Tuesday. He stated that the reconnaissance aircraft seemed to be designed for atmospheric data collection, but its other potential functions remain uncertain. "The government is closely monitoring and controlling the situation, taking appropriate measures, and summarizing their flight paths for judgment and analysis," Sun said, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

In the past year, the U.S. has also recorded a similar incident involving a spy flight that traversed the country before being intercepted on the South Carolina coast. Another Chinese reconnaissance aircraft was discovered after it crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Additionally, three Chinese surveillance crafts were identified flying over Texas, Florida, and Guam during the Trump administration.

The duration of Beijing's espionage program, which combines outdated spy flight technology with contemporary surveillance techniques, is unclear. Since 2018, spy flights have been observed over five continents.

The program is primarily operated from China’s Hainan Island province, located off its southeast coastline in the South China Sea, by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). It is known to operate over regional neighbors such as Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, and India. However, these reconnaissance flights, which collect military intelligence from nations strategically important to Beijing, have also been detected over the U.S.

According to recent opinion polls, the leading candidate for Taiwan's presidency is Lai Ching-te, the nominee of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. The main opposition party, the Kuomintang, traditionally advocates for closer ties with mainland China and has pledged to resume negotiations with China if it wins the election. However, the Kuomintang also asserts that the future of Taiwan will be determined by its people.
