In a recent development, Ibram Kendi, a renowned author and antiracist advocate, has attributed the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay to the actions of "racist mobs."

Kendi, who previously oversaw the Antiracist Research Center at Boston University, a project that collapsed amid allegations of mismanagement and exploitation, made this claim following Gay's departure from her role at Harvard. Gay's resignation came after weeks of mounting criticism and dwindling support from the Harvard Corporation, faculty, and students.

Gay, who served as the head of the nation's most prestigious university for a mere six months, demonstrated her reluctance to denounce antisemitism on Harvard's campus during a high-profile congressional hearing. During this hearing, she faced intense questioning from New York Representative Elise Stefanik. Subsequent investigations by researchers Christopher Rufo and Chris Brunet revealed instances of plagiarism in Gay's PhD dissertation. Further instances of plagiarism were discovered in her academic work, which includes no books and only 11 articles.

Despite these revelations, Kendi insists that Gay's resignation is a product of racism. He stated on X, "Racist mobs won’t stop until they topple all Black people from positions of power and influence who are not reinforcing the structure of racism." He added, "What these racist mobs are doing should be obvious to any reporter who cares about truth or justice as opposed to conflicts and clicks." Gay will continue to receive her annual salary of $900,000 as she remains on the faculty.

In her resignation letter, Gay referenced a discussion with the Harvard Corporation, following which she concluded that it was in Harvard's best interest for her to step down. She emphasized the need for the community to "navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual."

Gay expressed her distress over the doubts cast on her commitment to confronting hate and upholding scholarly rigor in the aftermath of the congressional hearing. She also described the personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus as "frightening."

In a similar vein, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill resigned after testifying in the same congressional hearing and making comparable comments about student antisemitism on campus being protected by free speech. However, unlike Magill, Gay initially received support from the Harvard Corporation and faculty until the more severe allegations of plagiarism surfaced. At Harvard, students can face expulsion for such academic misconduct.

Kendi, known for his racial-centric perspective, interprets every event, both current and historical, through the lens of race and racism. He also called for the Supreme Court of the United States to disqualify former President and GOP frontrunner Donald Trump from the upcoming 2024 primary ballot. He stated, "If the SCOTUS refuses to disqualify Donald Trump from running for POTUS after leading an insurrection on January 6, 2021, then it will be the latest indication that the Confederates lost the military battles but won the legal war."

During the congressional hearing, Stefanik asked Gay if calls for the genocide of Jews were "against the Code of Conduct at Harvard." Gay responded, "We embrace a commitment to free expression even of views that are objectionable, offensive, hateful - it’s when that speech crosses into conduct that violates our policies against bullying, harassment, intimidation…"

Stefanik further questioned, "Does that speech not cross that barrier? Does that speech not call for the genocide of Jews and the elimination of Israel? You testified that you understand that that is the definition of “intifada.” Is that speech according to the Code of Conduct or not?" Gay reiterated her commitment to free expression, even when the views expressed are objectionable, outrageous, and offensive.

Harvard has received failing grades in free speech rankings from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, ranking at the bottom and being the only university categorized as having an "abysmal" speech climate.
