GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Takes Aim At Newsom's Illegal Immigration Healthcare Plans

In a social media post, Greene expressed her concern over California's plan to provide free healthcare to undocumented immigrants, stating, "California is going to give illegals free healthcare, but nothing is free, the California taxpayers have to pay for it." She further highlighted the border crisis as a pressing issue and pondered the potential of a tax revolt as a solution, given the lack of support for impeachment.

Starting from the first day of the new year, California will extend free healthcare to all qualifying individuals, irrespective of their immigration status. This decision comes despite the state's projected $68 billion budget deficit for the upcoming fiscal year. As reported by the New York Post, the budget approved in May will enable nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants aged between 26 and 49 to receive comprehensive medical coverage under the plan.

Sally Pipes, a healthcare policy expert and the president and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, criticized the expansion. She told the New York Post, "The expansion was a bad idea when the state’s coffers were flush." Pipes added, "Now that California is struggling to make ends meet, using taxpayer money to cover non-citizens is simply irresponsible."

Simon Hankinson, an expert on border security and immigration at the Heritage Foundation, also voiced his concerns about the plan. He stated, "No surprise CA, despite budget deficit, will give illegal immigrants subsidized health care." Hankinson questioned the feasibility of the plan, asking, "The question is how and when they’ll get the federal taxpayer to bail them out. NY, IL, and MA want to know."

Greene's comments were in response to a post by Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin, who reported that the Customs and Border Patrol (CPB) had informed him of over 276,000 migrant encounters at the southern border in December alone. Melugin noted that this figure is "the highest single month ever recorded," surpassing the previous record set in September at 269,735. He also pointed out that the total migrant encounters since October 1st have exceeded 760,000, marking the highest ever recorded for the first quarter of a fiscal year.

Melugin further emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "That's a population size bigger than Seattle in just three months," and added, "All records being blown out of the water under the Biden admin as the crisis gets worse - not better."
