Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson found himself in the hot seat during a CNN interview with Poppy Harlow on Wednesday.

The conversation centered around the tragic death of a five-year-old migrant child at a shelter for undocumented immigrants, a situation for which Johnson seemed reluctant to accept responsibility.

The deceased child, Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero, reportedly fell ill and died at the overcrowded Pilsen shelter, as reported by The Chicago Sun-Times. The shelter, which opened its doors in October, currently houses over 2,000 migrants, with children making up more than half of its population.

Harlow pressed Johnson on the conditions at the shelter. "A five-year-old boy. His name is Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero died in a migrant shelter right before Christmas. Three other children around that time were transported to hospitals. Are children safe in the shelters right now?” she asked.

Johnson responded by pointing out the lack of a coordinated approach to migrant services at the border, including screenings, health checks, and vaccinations. However, Harlow redirected the conversation back to the shelters in Chicago, expressing her understanding of Johnson's frustrations with Governor Abbott and the Biden Administration but emphasizing the need to address the immediate situation in the city's shelters.

Johnson argued that the issues are interconnected, blaming the lack of coordination for the turmoil and stress experienced by the migrants. He expressed his condolences for the death of the young boy and stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the shelter's conditions caused his death.

The cause of Jean Carlos' death remains undetermined, pending an autopsy. The day following his death, four children and one adult were hospitalized after falling ill. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the shelter's conditions are unsanitary.

Chicago has seen a significant influx of migrants, leading to a strain on resources and prompting residents to call for federal intervention. In October, residents voiced their opposition to housing more undocumented immigrants during a neighborhood meeting, protesting against construction crews working on a new encampment for migrants.
