A spokesperson for Cuomo shared with the media outlet, "The Governor has made it clear he supports the mayor and there’s nothing new here.” When probed about the possibility of his mayoral run, Cuomo responded, "We need [Adams] to do his job" but admitted that he "is flattered."

A recent poll conducted by Slingshot, involving 600 registered voters, revealed that Cuomo could potentially secure an election victory with 22 percent of the vote. However, a significant 35 percent of those surveyed expressed uncertainty about the 12 candidates presented. This poll was reported by Politico.

Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy criticized the poll, stating, “Another day, another misleading poll, but this one by the same pollster who got the 2021 mayoral race completely wrong.” He added, "Let’s stop spreading false narratives by want-to-be candidates who are not going to be on the ballot. Crime is down and jobs are up, and that’s because Mayor Adams continues to deliver for the working people of this city every day, but attempting to tear down the city’s second Black mayor for blatant political purposes is shameful.”

In November, Mayor Adams' campaign was subjected to an FBI investigation as part of a federal probe into alleged campaign finance violations. The accusations suggest that his 2021 campaign collaborated with the Turkish government and others to receive illegal foreign campaign donations. Adams has consistently asserted that his campaign adhered "to the highest ethical standards."

Cuomo stepped down from his gubernatorial position in August 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct. Governor, Kathy Hochul, to assume leadership of the state and complete his term. Hochul later secured reelection.

Cuomo was eventually exonerated from the sexual harassment allegations that led to his resignation.
