In a recent study conducted by Vivint, a leading smart-home security company, the top ten riskiest cities in the United States during the holiday season have been identified.

The research was based on a combination of property crime data, Google search trends, and other security-related factors.

The study utilized data from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), Google Trends searches pertaining to holiday security, security features of Airbnb listings, registered Neighborhood Watch groups, and National Insurance Crime Bureau statistics. The 50 largest cities in the country were ranked according to their crime risk, with the highest "risk scores" indicating the most dangerous locations.

The Vivint report states, "Among the 182 U.S. cities we analyzed, St. Louis, MO; Salt Lake City, UT; and Denver, CO, topped the list of the riskiest cities for crime during the holiday season. Focusing on the specific risk factors contributing to these rankings shows that different cities present unique security challenges."

The Vivint study also highlighted that two in five U.S. homeowners have experienced property crime at least once during the last two holiday seasons. Nearly half of Americans who reported crimes during the last two holiday seasons disclosed losses or damages exceeding $100.

The report also states that signs of an unoccupied house, which may be a target for theft, include lights that are off, accumulating packages, and an empty driveway.
