In a recent report by the House Homeland Security Committee, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been implicated in the alleged "waste and abuse" of taxpayer funds in his management of the southern border crisis.

The report, initially obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, points to Mayorkas' decision to use hotel rooms for housing illegal immigrants instead of utilizing taxpayer-funded beds in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. The report also criticizes the cancellation of former President Donald Trump's border wall construction project, which it claims has led to significant overspending.

The report is the culmination of an investigation into Mayorkas led by Committee Chairman Mark Green, which began in June. Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia has filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, a move that was thwarted by Democrats. The Homeland Security Committee is expected to commence impeachment proceedings early in 2024, according to a committee staffer.

The staffer stated, "In keeping with the House of Representatives’ vote last month to refer articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas to our Committee, we will be moving swiftly into impeachment proceedings in the new year."

According to the report, ICE's fiscal year 2024 budget request to Congress estimated the cost of each bed at $142.44 or less. However, the Biden administration has contracted companies to house illegal immigrants in hotels, a decision that has proven to be more expensive.

Chairman Green told the DCNF, "From halting construction on a bought-and-paid-for border wall to leaving detention beds empty and empowering anti-enforcement officials at ICE, Secretary Mayorkas’ reckless decision-making and open-borders policies have led to the waste and abuse of billions of taxpayer dollars."

The report also reveals that the administration awarded a contract worth approximately $86 million to house illegal immigrant families in hotels at a cost of $392 per night. An inspector general’s report from April 2022 found that "ICE did not adequately justify the need for the sole source contract to house migrant families and spent approximately $17 million for hotel space and services at six hotels that went largely unused between April and June 2021."

The inspector general reported, "ICE’s sole source contract with Endeavors resulted in millions of dollars being spent on unused hotel space."

The committee's report also found that states are shouldering the financial burden of housing illegal immigrants, a cost that the DHS is allegedly "purposefully passing." The daily cost to New York City for housing each family is approximately $339, and $184 for single adults.

Green concluded, "Our most recent report showed how cities and states across this country are paying the financial price of those policies. What this evidence shows is that the federal government is also wasting taxpayer resources on a massive scale. This latest report provides much-needed transparency for the American people, who should not be forced to pay the cost of Mayorkas’ refusal to enforce the law any longer."
