The conversation took place as Carson was leaving a press conference where he, along with union leaders and fellow Democratic Representatives Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Cori Bush of Missouri, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and Ro Khanna of California, were advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. It's worth noting that the State Department officially labeled Hamas as a terrorist group back in 1997.
Carson emphasized the necessity for a dialogue regarding the establishment of a legitimate state for the Palestinian people. He expressed his discontent with the ongoing destructive resolutions, which he believes are merely attempts to score political points. "Well I certainly feel like now is the time for us to really talk of the establishment of a proper state for the people of Palestine. This cannot continue, these useless and destructive resolutions cannot continue to go on to gain political points,” Carson stated.

Carson also reiterated his condemnation of the October 7 attack, while stressing that a solution cannot be forced. When pressed further on his position regarding Hamas, Carson refrained from giving a direct response. Instead, he expressed his alignment with the majority of Americans in condemning antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-blackness. He urged for a focus on disagreements and critiques from both sides to extract truths and work towards a viable solution.

Carson voiced his concern over the potential impact of this issue on the 2024 elections. He said, “I agree with the majority of the American people. I think that antisemitism needs to be condemned, I think that Islamophobia needs to be condemned, I certainly think anti-blackness needs to be condemned and I certainly think that this is the time for us to look at our disagreements, look at the critiques on both sides, extract the truths from those critiques and work together toward a workable solution because I fear 2024, this issue will impact elections.”

On Wednesday, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on eight Hamas "officials and facilitators" for their actions representing the group's interests abroad and managing its finances.
This marks the fourth time the administration has taken such actions against Hamas since the October 7 terrorist attack. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reaffirmed the United States' commitment to dismantling networks that support Hamas funding streams to prevent and deter its terrorist activity.
