In a recent interaction, CNN's Phil Mattingly questioned New York Democratic Representative Dan Goldman about the Democrats' previous attempts to impeach ex-President Donald Trump, in light of the current efforts by House Republicans to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Mattingly pointed out the similarities between the current situation and the Democrats' rationale for formalizing the impeachment vote in 2019, as outlined in a letter by Speaker Pelosi. He asked, "Didn't you guys kind of lay the groundwork for everything the Republicans are doing right now?"

Goldman responded by drawing a distinction between the Trump and Biden administrations' responses to impeachment inquiries. He stated, "If it were the case that the Biden Administration was completely stonewalling and that President Biden said 'I will defy all subpoenas' and that the Biden Administration has turned over no documents and provided no witnesses, then, yes, the same logic would apply. But, of course, that is not the case, the White House and the administration has been unbelievably cooperative with a fishing expedition of an investigation."

He further argued that the Republicans have been given everything they asked for, and that their allegations are unfounded. He quoted James Comer, who had previously stated that he had received 100% cooperation from the Biden administration. Goldman concluded, "Their own witnesses said that at the original and only public impeachment hearing. So this is just, so they are just trying to desperately find some rationale to go forward with it. But there is none."

Mattingly, however, countered Goldman's argument by pointing out that it was not just Republicans who were questioning Biden's electability. He mentioned Dean Phillips, a Democratic presidential candidate and Goldman's colleague in the House, who had suggested in an interview that the impeachment inquiry into Biden could make him unelectable as a general election nominee.

In response, Goldman cited polling data from 18 Biden districts where a Republican currently holds a congressional seat. He argued that the voters in these districts are dissatisfied with their current representation and would be even more so if an impeachment vote were to proceed.

The conversation took place against the backdrop of recent allegations by Republicans that the Department of Justice deviated from standard procedures during its investigation into Hunter Biden, in an attempt to protect the President's son.
